Before the Battle      Joshua 5:1-15

After safely crossing the Jordan River, Joshua and the Israelites must now enter the battle to conquer this promised land, Canaan. The first city that stood in their way was Jericho, which was surrounded by a large wall. This chapter 5 tells us what we must do and what we must prepare before we go into battle.

1. Sanctify yourselves.

5:2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.”

This circumcision ceremony was a covenant between God and Abraham, and had been faithfully observed ever since. But after leaving Egypt, the boys born in the wilderness grew up without being circumcised. Why did God require this practice in the first place? That shows that the new generation would turn to God again and that they belonged to Him. It was a sign that they were worthy to keep God’s covenant, and that they believed and depended on God alone.

We, too, need to reassess who we are in our daily lives and before we go into a new battle. Because no one can win a battle by his own strength. Let us always turn to God and renew our faith again and again.

2. Receive the food of the Spirit.

5:12 The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.

From the day after they had eaten the produce of the land, the falling of manna ceased, and there was no more manna for the Israelites. But this is not a negative thing. It means that God will continue to provide them with everything we need.

One needs to receive nourishment of spiritual life through the Word of God. This Bible is given to us today as God’s Word. If we read it with faith, it will surely reach our spirits and we will receive the invisible, life-giving power. Let us build up the habit of listening to the words of the Bible.

3. Worship.

5:15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

At the end of chapter 5, a man (probably an angel) appeared and tells Joshua to take off his clothes. This means to worship in the presence of God. This is not an appropriate situation for worship, as the battle is about to begin. However, the Lord dared to command him to take off his shoes, kneel down, and worship God.

We, too, have battles in our daily lives. Let us remember that the key to victory is communion with God and worship.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Romans 8:37
